Creativity & Leadership

Dr. Quantz is a nationally recognized and leading advocate for guitar education. He is the creator/director of the Brownsville Guitar Ensemble Festival and Competition which is the only national guitar ensemble competition and one of the largest classical guitar events in the US.  He served for seven years as the Director of Education for the Guitar Foundation of America (GFA).  In addition he was the creator and director of the GFA’s International Youth Competition (5 years) and Guitar Ensemble Showcase (5 years).  His ensemble program at the University of Texas at Brownsville is unsurpassed in musicianship and accomplishment.

“The UTB program is the center of the guitar ensemble universe.” -  William Kanengiser, Grammy® winner, Los Angeles Guitar Quartet

Teacher & Program Builder

Dr. Quantz has enjoyed singular success developing the guitar division at the University of Texas at Brownsville into a dynamic, award-winning, and highly respected program.  His students have distinguished themselves individually as top prize winners in several regional and national competitions. Under his direction the UTB Guitar Orchestra was twice featured on the internationally syndicated “Guitar Alive!” show on National Public Radio. The UTB Guitar Ensembles were the first ever invited to perform during the GFA annual convention, and the UTB One O’clock Guitars have been featured in UT system events in Austin, Texas.

“UT Brownsville has one of the best classical guitar programs in
the United States.”
 -  Tony Morris, Classical Guitar Alive!, National Public Radio

“Michael Quantz is the rare educator who has decades of experience, yet the exuberance of a first year teacher. He has a level-headed approach to dealing with every day challenges and a passion for the act of making music which translates with ease to his students.”  -  Martha Masters, Classical Guitarist, President, Guitar Foundation of America

History of Accomplishment

100% university student employment after graduation (really!)

“UT Brownsville has the unique distinction of having placed every guitar music education graduate as teachers in our area schools. Increasingly, it seems, universities (and faculty) will be judged by their ability to create programs and graduate students in areas that respond to local and national employment demands. By all standards of measurement Professor Quantz and his programs have proven to be eminently successful.”
- Dr. Daniel J. Heimmermann, College of Liberal Arts Dean, UT Brownsville
